Cocochan is a Pan-Asian restaurant that artfully embodies the philosophy of Pan-Asian unity and identity through its design. This concept is rooted in the historical context of Pan-Asian symbolism, emerging as a collective resistance to Western colonialism and imperialism following the Second World War. The restaurant’s design reflects this ethos, presenting an aesthetic narrative that liberates itself from European influence while celebrating Asian cultural heritage.
The spatial narrative begins with a juxtaposition of colonial architectural elements, such as vaults and arches, which form the traditional structural foundation of the space. These are layered with contemporary Pan-Asian symbolism, creating a striking visual dialogue between colonial influences and Asian traditions. The wooden latticework arches, reminiscent of bamboo groves, are a defining feature of the design, introducing a warm, organic rhythm to the space while symbolizing growth and harmony in Asian cultures.
The seating area, surrounded by lush greenery, exudes an inviting ambiance. Emerald green velvet upholstery is paired with black marble-topped tables, reflecting opulence and serenity in equal measure. The vibrant greenery along the periphery adds a natural element, enhancing the contrast between structured interiors and the organic forms. The intricate chevron-patterned flooring combines traditional craft with modern precision, uniting diverse influences seamlessly.
